I went down to the cafe for breakfast and had a choice of rice dish A or rice dish B with tea or coffee. I elected for the very British "I'll just have tea, I can't eat rice in the morning" and she managed to find me some toast that she made into a Jaffle (this is a new word I learnt- it's a toasted sandwich, Jaffle is much better), so I did get tea and toast.
09:25 Well the train was due at 918, and I'm still sitting here. The website actually said the train left at 938, so I wonder if it will turn up nearer then.
09:31 Hurrah! It's arrived! I got on my carriage, went to my seat number - a window seat, and found that the 'window' seat was right up against the window partition mostly and the 2 inches of window available to look out of is broken in that the inside of the double glazing was completely steamed up. I elected not to spend the next 9 hours not enjoying the view I'd come specifically to see by sitting in my assigned seat and moved up to a better viewing spot. About 5 mins later a family of 3 turned up, clearly I was in their seats as they were looking at me as if I'd slapped a relative (ie confused and a little outraged), I looked back feigning confusion and they decided to sit elsewhere. The carrier is pretty empty anyway so it's no big deal. They appear to have chosen to take a non 'window' seat anyway next to a partition.
Our engine upfront is a proper diesel train, like the ones in Russia, and like the one in that film unstoppable, the sort we don't use in England - maybe that's why rail travel is so expensive, although now I think perhaps it's to pay all those handsomely paid train drivers who earn an absolute mint
14:26 Wow! I just finished Pillars of The Earth, all 1065 pages (of small text) of it. What a thoroughly bloody brilliant book! I recommend that one that's for sure! On to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo then...
18:05 I've been watching some of the tv episodes of Pillars and they really have gone off on a bit of a wild tangent with the story, I often wonder why writers go off on a new storyline from books when the boom is great as it is, especially when the author is consulted for the tv program. I'd be thinking, "I didn't spend all this time and energy coming up with a brilliant story for you lot to whimsically go changing it!"
19:10 I arrived fairly late in the grand scheme of things and probably missed the last bus going to Kota Bharu so ended up getting a taxi which I was worried would cost a lot- it only cost £4, I didn't even try and negotiate either as I have no choice and considering the bus journey supposedly took an hour it sounded quite cheap actually.
Although who knows - you can get Nasi goreng for 50p just over there (I'm looking out the window at a food stall)
20:13 I arrived at the guesthouse, it was pretty basic, and there was absolutely no one to check me in, I waited over an hour and still no one turned up
I got back just after 9, at last someone was there to check me in, and because of the inconvenience he just put me in a double bed room instead of the dorm, which was a nice turn up for the books I suppose :D Went to bed and watched Days of Thunder...what a classic! lol!
