11:01 Yesterday turned out to be a write off. I was having one of those days where life catches up with you and you need to sleep, and Sleep I did, until midday, which gave me about 13 hours in all. For the rest of the day I sat in the common room playing on my computer, just resting, which was fine because I spent absolutely nothing apart from the price of the hostel. It was no great loss as it poured with rain the entire day. I had intended to go to see a volcano and some hot springs, but as I have many days to kill as the west of java isn't exactly packed with activities, here I am in the equivalent of somewhere pretty dull like derby (the dullest place in England I've ever had to stay!) but with traffic congestion like London on a weekend.

So today, I have put the volcano/hot springs plan into action, and tomorrow I go to Bogor which has some botanical gardens I can spend some time in, plus I'm doing a couch surf - ie, I'm staying for free in someones house, this will be my first time, but my next one is planned for Singapore.

Just driving through the outskirts of banding there are some pretty impressive houses that must house rich people, most likely government types as they appear to be the only people who get rich. I'm in a little minibus they call an Angkutan, or an angkot for short, which is going to lembang and stops when people flag it down or want to get off. The hour long journey only costs 6,000 -40p then i need another bus to the volcano which will be more expensive.

There was a really nice lady in the bus next to me, she is 63 and invited me to stay at her mothers house if I was staying longer. She thought I was 24, which is most pleasing. Having inspected my temples at great length since I have no more bleach and can see the real colour, I'm amazed to see that I have no greys!
11:15 Although I haven't seen motorbike loads as impressive as Vietnam and Cambodia, I still occasionally see slightly ridiculous things. One being a cello strapped to someones back on a bike, but mostly it's just that the entire family are on a single bike. They make small crash helmets here for the children which are like the adult motorbike helmets, just a lot smaller.
12:07 The bus i swapped to in lembang took me to the volcanic site for 20,000. I asked him to take me to the top of the crater rim as it was 3km away and all up hill (and im just not that fit!) and he asked for 50,000! I said we'd just come all the way from lembang for 20,000, so I offered him 20, and he accepted, thankfully! Once i got out at the top of the crater I was overcome by this awful smell of bad eggs. I assume this is the toxic smell coming from the volcano!
12:29 Before I set off on the long walk around the crater, I decided I needed some fuel, so had some nasi goreng - fried rice, with a view of the crater, and also a couple in White having their wedding photos done.
12:56 Once again, whilst eating still, a couple of girls came rushing up saying 'photo!' and sat down next to me, they werent shy about getting right up close, arms around me either! I still find this celebrity status amusing and strange, but also fun :)
14:54 After I walked round the eggy volcano I got a motorbike to what I asked for Ciater Hot Springs, (obviously the driver took the opportunity to feel up my leg on the journey) which I thought would only be 10,000 according to my sheet of paper. It was 18 to get in and then they wanted 38 more just to go in the springs. I've spent enough today and am not so excited about hot springs, so I got a refund and went looking for the angkot bus home. The bus back only cost 10,000!

We passed by tea plantations all carefully grown in rows all the way up the sides of the hills, strawberry fields, and whole bunch of things I just don't know. It was a great journey seeing all these things.

I spent the evening in the little cafe next door with the owners, they taught me how to play Monopoly with playing cards and I had some dinner. We had a nice evening actually which was good for me to be around people.

Enjoying looking at your photos - I haven't seen any of them before. Trust you are having a fascinating interesting trip - maybe we'll see you at Xmas, altho' we may be in France with Andrew & family. If we do, think we'll drive to Basel and then can maybe get 2-3 days skiing at Grindelwald. Your Dad is very jealous and not too amused by that!!
Love - Lindsay & Jane
