Von, I haven't read hitchhikers! I must find a copy as folks reckon I'll enjoy it.
Now that I'm up, I have chores to do today. Laundry first, I have to really look around for one here since there really aren't many. I found one on the waterfront eventually. It's very small and absolutely brimming with clothes hang up from the ceiling and in bags stacked up inside and outside the shop!
13:37 From the laundry I went for a wander in the area tying to decide what to do. On cannon street I found a few pet shops where I could gaze at the puppies
The next bit of business for the day was to buy a hard drive for dad. He needs one and I thought I could send home my photos and videos for the last couple of months on them.
What was funny was that after nearly knocking down an old Chinese man he asked me of all people, directions to the ferry!
I must look like I know what I'm doing for someone to ask me. Mind you I was in jeans (about the only thing not getting washed) and not carrying a backpack or anything, just strolling around with purpose since I knew where I was going on this occasion.
16:42 I've picked up my camera now which has had a little bit of a clean so I'm really going to look after it properly as it was expensive to sort
17:16 There are things I still need to do here.
Go to Cheung Chau island
Go to Lantau island
Go to Lamma island
Go to the Matilda hospital and also see the peak by day
Go on the peak tram
Go to Sha Tin Temple
Go to Ocean park
Go to Heritage Museum
Go to see where Kai tak airport was
18:34 Happy Valley racecourse is a really nice track. It only cost 5 dollars to get in and the middle of the track has football fields and a running track etc in it which I good use of space
I did not. There are no horses. We've come to the races to watch a tv screen. Hugely disappointed.
I've discovered why. The horses are in Sha Tin! I thought there was only one racecourse here! It seems we're not the only disappointed people here, there were several tourists I overheard being as bemused as us followed by curses when they also discovered that there would be no horses about.
20:55 Having been disappointed by the lack of actual horses at Happy Valley we left a bit unhappy.
We got back on the Tram and decided to ride it to the end.
Beyond north point there were far more residential highrise buildings all looking very scruffy and dirty with paint flaking off.
Im not sure what's worse - the laundry all hanging out on wooden poles and metal racks or the sterile White strip lights emanating from the flats.
We got to the end which was charming as it went round in a tight circle and we came back.
21:09 Today has ended with me in bed with some tv again and my lonely planet books planning out the next stages again.
It has been nice to spend time here and not feel rushed or getting up early all the time. I really feel like I've been able to absorb my surroundings a lot more.
Best thing today: discovering some new places to eat and feeling a bit more like a local
Worst thing: no horses at the racecourse
Most beautiful: happy valley racetrack - it was really greeeeeen
