Well what a strange place, I´m not entirely sure why people put El chalten on their list of places to visit, but they do.
Its a tiny town with mountains all round it, dust blowing through and quite frankly not a lot there. One road in and the same round out, if you ever manage to leave.... I think people may well disappear here never to be seen again.
Although I said there was no more walking going on, I booked up for a glacier trek (acceptable walking on ice with crampons) only to discover we had to walk there, ahhhhh.
Out of bed for a walking start at 7.00am, in the dark, we trudged up a big hill/mountain thing. Two hours of walking later we arrived at a tent in the woods to be fitted for crampons, stuffed them in our rucksacks and carried on for another hour, took a taxing route over some boulders in a fair bit of wind to a zip slide thing across a river.
We could see the glacier, we could almost smell the glacier, we´d soon be walking on the glacier with crampons, how cool would that be.
Across the wind the guides voice could be heard, "tis too windy to carry on, No? would be dangerous". Huh what ahhhhhhh
SIX hours of walking and NO glacier, NO crampons, NADA.
So what would any self respecting person do at this point, stamp your feet, have a paddy?
Naaaaaa go to the pub (sorry Becky, consolation beer acceptable??). It was a little micro brewey, South American, that made their own beer!
