Entry 19 of 50 | show all | print this entry

Today was a really fun day. We started our drive to the Dead Sea and not long after we stopped for snacks - there was a nice looking bakery so I stopped and got some biscuits that have a hint of cinnamon and are really good. On the way to the Dead Sea we drove near the spot where it is believed John the Baptist christened Christ. the view along this part of Jordan is quite remarkable with Israel, Palestine and Jerusalem all a stones throw away. If it had been a clearer day you should be able to make out Jericho and the taller buildings of Jerusalem. We got to the Dead Sea Spa Resort and went down to the beach. We left all our cameras with Jamie as the salinity would kill them. You walk into the water and as soon as you are above waist level in the water you can float in a standing position - it was very strange and very hard to stand up if you had been floating on your back or stomach. The older women of the group were quite happy that for just a moment they were getting a free boob job. I didn't spend too long in the water because it was very drying and hot! Also as soon as you get the water near your eyes or your mouth it just burns. After getting out of the water we had a shower to get the layer of salt off and then we hit the pool. The pool was really nice and there was a slide which was cool once we figured that you go faster if lying on your stomach. The only problem with that was that twice when I had built up good speed at the end and splashed into the water my bathers top moved a little bit and I gave poor 60ish Lex a bit of a shock. A bit embarassing and I didn't go down the slide again. We then had lunch at the resort and it was buffet style- very nice food though. The chocolate mousse melted by the Jordanian pudding was great!!! After lunch we started our drive to Wadi Musa. On the way we stopped at Wadi Mujib which is the Grand Canyon of Jordan. We also stopped for a view of Karak Castle which is another Crusader castle. Soon after arriving in Wadi Musa I went for my first Hamam - Turkish Bath. The steam room was horrible and I couldn't stay in there for long because it was so hot and the group in there before us kept making it hotter and hotter. Thankfully there was a cooler steam room which I mainly stayed in. There were 8 of us wanting the scrub and massage but it was taking a long time so they asked if I would mind having one of the men do my massage - I didn't care and actually preferred the guy because he was stronger. It was an interesting experience - you get soaped and then a very harsh scrub and then a fairly strong quick massage. We have an early start tomorrow as we head into Petra, so looking forward to that. Bye
