The Oscar Wilde sculpture in Merrion Square
The Oscar Wilde sculpture in Merrion Square
We had pastries for breakfast in Merrion Square in Dublin, a lovely little garden next to where Oscar Wilde was born. There was a neat sculpture of him in the park, as well as an eternal flame, a religious sculpture of Christ, some headstones for various events, as well as a carved harp.  It was sort of a place to put all the arty bits which didn't have anywhere else to go.  Quite neat, though, all the same.

Our next stop was supposed to be the Hill of Allen (about an hour out of Dublin), but we couldn’t find a way up it, so we went on to the next stop, the Bog of Allen.  However, we took a wrong turn, got lost, spent the next hour finding ourselves again, and finally got to the Bog of Allen, only to find that it is closed on weekends.  Not a good start, missing 2 out of 2 sights.

However, we drove south for 90 minutes, and finally broke our duck by finding the Abbey ruins at Kells.  They were really well preserved, and plentiful, and we had a good walk around them for half an hour, making up theories for what all the ruins were when they weren’t ruins.  In this time, we only saw 3 locals walking their dogs, and lots of sheep.  There were no other tourists, yet it was free to get in to.  I don’t understand why the Book of Kells costs 9 euros to see 2 pages, yet these great ruins were totally free.
