When we arrived, it put tokyo's heat to shame. I had a fleece on for some reason, and as soon as I walked outside the airport I chucked my backpack off and ripped my fleece off. I think it was about 35 degrees at 11pm. Our hostel apparently stopped letting people in at 11pm, but we had already booked in for three nights using the net. I tried ringing for ages but no reply. We just said flip it, and caught the bus to the area where we were staying.
half an hour later, we were there, and we got off the bus to a hot swarm of people, and a distinct smell of 'real' chinese food, which was being sold on the street. Every building must have been 20 stories high, all with something different on each floor indicated by the super bright neon lights. We walked up and down aimlessly, hoping for the hotel to jump out at us.... and it did!
We got the elevator up to the 7th floor, to the Dragon hostel. A little worried at what might meet us on the other side, and whether they would let us check in at 12am, we rang the door bell nervously (is that a word?!). There were a few footsteps, and when it opened, a little chinese man in his pj's stood there. He shuffled us into the reception, which had a massive plasma screen. He pointed at our names, and then we gave him the cash. He showed us to our room, which was small, windowless, but clean none the less, with super air conditioning (essential) and a tv with english channels!
He then broke out into a full explanation of what everything in the room was for, in the most basic english possible. If I was a girl, I would say he was soo cute. We went out after we had settled, and straight away I saw what looked like bread. I pointed, paid and bit into it. mmm, deep fried bread. the grease dripped from my mouth, but i didn't care, it was heaven. We went home shortly after, and forgot which room we were in. We tried all the doors with no luck, so we had to wake up the cute little man, who wasnt impressed. He took us round the corner, to the only door we hadn't tried, and bingo, bed.
The next day, we did the major tourist things. Took the star ferry across the harbour. Took a tram up to the peak of hong kong, which is amazing. it climbs a hill at 45 degrees, being pulled by a rope. And looked round some major markets. At the peak we went into a fancy restaurant, and just asked to drink. They tried to sit us at the bar, but i demanded to sit outside. The place was full of hong kong business men trying to impress western clients.... and 2 scruffy backpackers drinking stella, in a long glass. The view was amazing, but we got bit to shit by mosquitos, because we didn't expect them and didn't protect ourselves.
The skyline put Sydney to shame, and the neon was equal to Tokyo's display. Over the next few days we did all the tourists things, went to another temple and wafted some smoke in our face. Went to a beach! which was really nice. Got lost in a garden in the middle of nowhere, until 2 lads took us back to the tube station. We got talking to them, and i think they think that westerners dont have to work, or go to school, and they didn't believe me when i said we were broke, understandably.
The people loved my dreads, i think, well they stared at me in amazement, and some women on the ferry just grabbed them and pissed her sides. Thinking back, maybe they were just laughing at me.
We watched England V portugal at a big junction in Hong Kong, where all types of people lined the streets. We got 8 San miguels, and stood and watched the game unfold. There were 3 Portugese people in front of us, and I was slagging off portugal, in my drunken state, and then one of them turned round and started ranting and raving in portugese. it was the height of rudeness, and left us itching with anger, but we had to walk away, because there were police everywhere, probably for the best.
Needless to say, I was mortified at the end, and Cat let me get a KFC to cheer myself up :)
For the last 2 days we just relaxed and walked round alot and went to some museums which were pretty cool, up until yesterday, when we caught the train to Beijing. A 24 hour train journey! We still haven't got into mega budget mode, so we got a high class seat, and we ended up in a cabin to ourselves! The journey was suprisingly painless, and some of the scenery was beautiful. I slept for 9 hours! and tightened my dreadlocks. The highlight was when I walked into the corridor with my dreads tied up into a pinapple shape. The train hostess screamed, and started shouting in chinese. I'm no expert but i think she was saying either 'ah!...giant blonde head eating spider' or 'he's got a pinapple... on his head'
I managed to calm her down, and locked myself in my cabin.
