I stumbled onto a Yam Festival in Ho (a regional capital). The ceremony itself was pretty
but for several hours leading up to it different groups performed
traditional music while the chiefs of all the villages in the area made
their grand entrances just like drawings I'd seen from hundreds of
years ago. Each chief was shaded by a giant fringed parasol and lead by
a procession of men and women carrying gold tipped staffs, weapons,
carved stools, and huge bowls of fabric and vegetables all of them
dressed to the nines in toga like garments made of vibrant colored
kente cloth and clay beads. This was contrasted by cops zooming around
on new
motorcycles and a voice over the loudspeaker announcing
"Would the owner of a black land cruiser, license plate number ---
please move your vehicle..."
