In the hills around Kpalime I spent a few days
hiking through butterfly filled forests of coffee and fruit trees. I
stayed in a little mountain village and next door to my hostel there was
some sort of choral group that seemed to be practicing 24-7. One night
I decided to go check them out and took my MP3 recorder. They were so
excited at the idea of being recorded that they insisted I come back the
next day and video tape them. I had been planning to leave but agreed
to stick around an film them. They got all dressed up in their costumes
and put on a real performance just for me--they're an odd combination of
drummers, a chorus, dancers and a trumpet. I assumed the trumpet was
someone's idea of thinking outside of the box until I saw other similar
groups (complete with trumpets) just over the border. You'll just have
to see it I guess. They gave me an official T-shirt and now consider me
their promoter. I plan to make them a MySpace page when I get home.
They are certainly hard-working so who knows maybe someone will discover
them.
