I've hardly packed anything, and I'm just praying that all the stuff I posted on Craigslist will disappear before I do. I'm going to get a lot of angry phone calls right about the time I cross the California state line if it looks like I still live here. At least I have my bag packed. Well, mostly packed. I realized today that I'm never going to "be ready". I think they say that about kids... I'm probably still rushing it a little, but who cares? I set up an interview so I'm sticking to it
Wallie has no idea what's coming. But he's getting used to not getting used to anything. At least he knows where he is supposed to sleep. Of course, that will be changing nightly before long, but at least he knows his blanket. I can't wait for him to get all his gear. My mom is scared that I'm going to put too much responsibility on him, but I'll take it easy on the little guy. Hopefully the boots and backpack she's bringing will fit him. He's gonna be a rugged little boy.
In two days, I will begin the longest drive or vacation or any time in an unfamiliar place that I have ever even considered. The insomnia is no mystery. I'm as anxious to hit the road as Wallie is to chase a tennis ball across the yard. There are so many amazing things I'm about to see and do and discover. So much I've never done, and all the freedom in the world.
Thank you for reading. I hope you will follow me and Wallie in our Awesome Adventure across North America. We have a pretty good idea of where we're going, but you never know... I'm not going to guarantee any landmarks so you'll just have to follow along and see where we end up. We have several goals So far, Wallie hasn't contributed much to this list, but he has given me full rights for representation on his behalf. Our initial list of goals looks like this:
- See as many mountains, lakes, rivers, and wonders of the world as we can find
- Eat great food while on the trail, drink great beer while off the trail, and listen to great music while on the road
- Make new friends and visit old ones
- Learn to live by our wits (A little Scheeleism for you.)
More to come soon. The first few weeks are going to be instense. It will mostly likely be our most extreme portion of the trip. Don't forget to check in.
