We drive back to Newtown through crazy Sydney traffic. We've really noticed the rudeness of drivers over here, constantly pushing in but not letting others go, running red lights, and almost hitting pedestrians. And the pedestrians themselves are pushy too! It makes me feel rather small-town-girl to complain, but it's very noticeable. I'm pleased Nathan is driving and not me.
In Newtown we grab our bags and eat one last lunch at our favourite Mexican eatery, then we hit the road south
Once we turn off to Jervis Bay things improve significantly. We drive through farmland dotted with autumn trees, some very cute little towns and eventually a national park. We arrive at Callala Bay about three hours after leaving Sydney and pick up the keys to the house we've hired for the next two nights. It's odd to us that it's a townhouse, part of a larger complex that feels a bit gated community-ish, when we're in the middle of the bush by the beach.
We have a lovely dinner. It's great to have some home cooking after a week of eating out. The food we've had in Australia has been excellent, but the richness becomes a little overwhelming after a while. At about 9pm our friends Nat and Nick, who live in Canberra, finally arrive. It's great to see them!
The next morning Nathan wakes up feeling terrible. We decide he must have picked up the bug Allan had earlier. He spends the day in bed. Nat, Bex and I take a long walk on the beach and around the rocks. After lunch the three of us and Nick go for a drive to another beach called Currarong. This is a stunning place. We drive south in search of a pub and find the perfect place in Huskisson. We have a drink as we watch the surfers play in the waves.
