Where I stayed
... and following inspection - it had a bug free pool!
Our first whole day was spent travelling down to the Florida Keys - all the way down to Key West and back! The journey involved travelling alongside swamp land and eventually out over the islands where you could see the sea either side as you drove along the road and then to get to Key West access was over the seven mile bridge which just went across the sea, which was mainly a glorious azure blue but sometimes it was made up of a multitude of blue shades, depending on the depth of the water and whether the bed was sand, rocks or seaweed. The best bit of the journey was when we saw our first dolphins - just two swimming alongside the old bridge. We had been looking out for dolphins throughout Australia and New Zealand with no success.
Key West was smaller and 'quainter' than we had anticipated and although there were some very nice boats moored in the bays, it didn't smack of being just for the rich. We did, of course, have some key lime pie and saw pelicans in the harbour. We had seen them flying over the bridge as we arrived. We finished our trip with a visit to the southernmost point of continental of the United States and had a quick paddle in the sea.
The next was spent visiting Monkey Jungle! It cost a lot more than we had anticipated but was worth the money. All the animals were in the most fantastic condition and the walkways were all covered in wire fences with monkeys on the outside. You could feed them by putting food into little bowls on chains which the monkeys would pull up and eat. Excellent entertainment for Steven and D alike!
Day three saw us finishing our shopping and Yvonne bought some new trainers for herself as you just can't visit the US without buying trainers!
D and Yvonne are feeling very positive as Steven has been impeccably behaved since arriving at Cutler Ridge. It maybe because he knows he's going home soon or maybe he's finally, at the age of three and a half, grown out of the terrible twos! In fact, he was remembering Auntie Danni (Auntie Diane to the uninitiated!) when we were shopping and pointed out a Miami Marlins baseball team T-shirt and said Auntie Danni would like this! Auntie Danni will be relieved to hear, that although it was tempting to take his advice, we didn't buy it. It really wasn't Auntie Danni's style!
The weather has been hot, although a little cloudy and windy, but we have been watching the news about the weather, and so far applauding ourselves on the timing and choice of our route. Originally we intended to go up the west coast, across to New York and down the east coast, but there has been flooding, the highest level for over a hundred years in North Dakota and Minnesota; blizzards in Colorado, north Texas and Kansas; thunderstorms and flooding in south Alabama and Mississippi and tornado warnings in the Carolinas! The south of Florida is one of the few unaffected areas - as yet!
