The big day arrived and we set off for the Jack Daniels distillery.  The weather was grim - well it's all relative!  It was cold (in the 50's.  That's Fahrenheit which they still use in the States) and grey.  It cost nothing to do the tour, unlike the Bundaberg factory in Australia, and we viewed all the processes and had a lovely smell of the whiskey as it was dripping through the charcoal, which the lady assured us was what made Tennessee whiskey so special.  At the end of the tour we were only given a glass of American style lemonade or coffee rather than sampling the wears as we did at Bundaberg.
It was interested to find out that Lynchburg, where the distillery is, is a dry county, so you cannot buy a Jack Daniels in a pub or restaurant!  The employees are given a pint of Jack Daniels to take home on one Friday a month, known as Good Friday, and the tour guide said that the rates of absenteeism on that day was always very low!
We liked Tennessee.  D liked the food which included sweet potatoes and real home cooking and also liked their 'real American accents'.  Yvonne loved the houses which all had porches with rocking chairs on them and the larger properties with white fences around the land where they bred Tennessee trotting horses.  We didn't see any of the trotting horses and the place was very quiet, but we could imagine how busy it would be when there were trotting horse events on.  Yvonne also thought, with the weather adding to the image, that it was very much like the Peak District with many of the properties having ramshackle small farm outbuildings and a number of dilapidated vehicles close by!
