As we drew into Wellington, the fantastic weather was disappearing fast and the sky was looking grey. We managed to hit Wellington at rush hour and we decided it would be best to see Wellington by car and headed towards the east coast until we found somewhere to stop. The weather forecast was not excellent for the next couple of days and Yvonne was persuaded to allow us to stay in a motel that night. We drove round many mountains and, hoorah, Steven managed to avoid being sick, partly it has to be said by sleeping! We eventually arrived at Masterton, having passed through many interesting but ominous looking clouds on the way and the rain was just about starting. We found a motel and Steven pointed out that there was a clock dong opposite, so it was decided that we should stop there. Unlike in Japan, we have been favoured by the weakness of the NZ$ against the pound and Yvonne went crazy and booked two nights at the motel!
The heavens opened and strange it was to be relishing torrential rain! The motel room was excellent - free wireless internet, right next to the free laundry room, separate bedroom for Steven and even a gas cooker with an oven which D had to use to have some roast lamb! We are continually surprised, or disappointed, with the motel rooms and the one thing that is certain is that the price of the room does not reflect the facilities provided, even within the same resort.
We spent a day in Masterton which seemed to be full of interesting museum collections that were only available to see by appointment, however we found the best playground in the world which was very safe (no big gaps to fall out of) and kept Steven amused for ages.
