We set off further south through the continuing beautiful scenery of the Southern Alps, stopping off to view the Franz Joseph glacier.  We walked from the car park to the first stopping point, and possibly the least impressive view of the glacier, however with Steven on D's shoulders it would have been a hard slog.  By this point, Steven had already been named Pukeahontus!  The winding roads didn't suit him!  We eventually got on to straighter roads and stopped at Bruce Bay, a beautiful blue bay, only to find Macca Pacca had been at work building piles of stones.  Sadly Steven was asleep by this point!
We eventually arrived at Lake Hawea where we pitched camp for the next two nights.  The site was by the edge of the lake and provided D with an opportunity to go fishing.  This was one of his less successful fishing trips, catching nothing at all!  The weather was fine and the only drawback was that we were plagued by sandflies which are minute insects but leave you with a mosquito type bite which only emerges a couple of days later.  Thank goodness for anti-histamine and insect repellent!
