Where I stayed
Kang Travellers Hostel
We were taken to the bus station by the bridge to the mainland on Penang where we were to told to wait for the bus to arrive at Platform 11 at two o'clock, where, we had been promised, a luxury, express, V.I.P. bus would be taking us on the four to five hour journey to the Cameron Highlands.
Come three o'clock, the bus arrives and the driver proceeds to open the engine cover up and throw a bucket of water on the radiator to cool it down. Undaunted and relieved the bus had arrived, it had been stuck in traffic for an hour on the bridge, we got on. D had a seat that reclined each time the bus braked sharply and Steven had been sick before we even got on. Oh deep joy!
We headed off to the mainland where we were stuck in traffic for ages but eventually set off at a fair pace on the toll roads. We stopped for twenty minutes at Ipoh where we made a rash purchase of some rather nice looking pastries which turned out to be what seemed like savoury toppings on a sweet dough base. A bargain at 1.5 ringgits (approx 30p) but following the sick debarcle Yvonne didn't quite fancy them so D ate two of the three reluctantly. Steven feasted on a whole tube of cheesy Pringles. Clearly the vomiting incident didn't have any lasting impact on him.
We had told the hostel we would be there between 6 and 7pm. Time came and went and darkness began to fall at about 7pm and we were only entering the Cameron Highlands area, taking hairpin bends with the driver either on his mobile phone or chatting to his mate. We then proceeded to stop at any place anyone requested.
Many, many, many stops later we finally arrived at the last stop at 9pm where, thank goodness, the person from the hostel was still waiting for us and we made the final part of the journey in the minibus.
