We boarded our small plane from Bali to Flores and arrived less than two hours later. It was hot in Flores, but very clear and nice. Inside the airport we were approached by two men who were offering to take us anywhere we wanted for 5$ Canadian. We confirmed with security that they were in fact legit and agreed to let them take us to a nice place on the beach called Baja beach hotel. Once there we got some rooms for a little less that regular price and checked in. We returned to the reception area and and sat down with our drivers to discuss an excursion to Komodo island. They were offering a two day boat trip to Rinca and Komodo island, pink beach and swimming with giant mantas. We agreed on a price and they would pick us up the next morning.

We walked to town, around 1.5km away to have a look around. We did some store to store searches for foot ware which I found a paid of converse for less than 5$ Canadian, and they were so comfortable.

After waking to a place calls treetop resto, ha a beer and a light meal, we walked outside to witness a sea of children lining the roads as far as they eyes could see. A police car was leading another car that was talking about safe sex and aids etc to these school children, who, once he car passed them, joined the stream of children following. I stated to Marc that we needed to stay ahead of the flow or we would take forever to get back to base. We jumped ahead of them and walked down the street which was lined with children in their respective school uniforms all grouped together.

We got so far ahead of the following vehicles that we were alone in the middle of the street, with hundreds of children looking at us. It was so quiet, just like the village of the damned. I felt anxious so I lift my arms up in the street and yelled out "Canada!" to a response of a huge cheer and clapping and smiling from the kids. I walked one side, Marc the other and we far high fives to the still cheering kids. Every time we got to a new section, they would start cheering as well. This continued for around ten was the most amazing thing I ever experienced, I had a permanent smile for the better part of the day. Words cannot describe this event.

We finally returned to base still talking about the experience and decided to go for a swim in the very very warm pacific water, it was wonderful. Later in the evening we returned to town and ate at treetop where I got a chance to play pool against the locals. I was hot and playing well and could see that as I kept beating them, they would call up they friends to challenge me. After about 6 victories in a row, I finally lost to a locale who showed up just to play me, and left right after beating me.

We walked back to base and Marc found he had two geckos living in his room, which are loud during the night. I walked into my washroom, turned on the lights and saw 6-7 cockroaches scurrying around. I found a way to get them back down the drain pipe using a glass and shower jet. I then place he glass upside down over the drain hole to stop them from coming back and left the bathroom light on the rest of my time there...clever :)
