Just outside the town is the Black Dragon Pool, a lovely park in which to relax, and look at the mountains, over the lake and past the bridge and wonderful scenery.
Like most of China, there are the tourist areas, where you meet an interesting picture of life, then there are the local villages, a little further out where life passes somewhat slower. The Naxi unlike some of the other peoples seemed well placed to handle the advances in the Chinese culture that are taking place, taking what they need and leaving what they are allowed to leave.
From Lijiang, visits to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Tiger Leaping George, and the First Bend of The Yanzte, etc, are all interesting trips and are great sites, but until you get into the villages, you don't understand how much life here is really a grind, how oppressive it can be, yet in it all, there appears in certain areas to be a spirit of life inspite of the hardships.
Interestingly whilst life further away from Beijing appears more laid back and relaxed, it is very clear that peoples are still in darkness, and that oppression by the powers, principalities and authorities, is very much a spiritual oppression and darkness is enhanced by life and conditions imposed. However it is clear that some peoples groups, and certain individuals and families within some villages have a hope, and life above and beyond the Norm!!!!
They truly know what a sacrificial life is, and what it means to be part of a family of believers!
