Hello all.
We write to you from the spectacular Guatemala City. We arrived about 2 pm today after the first flight of our trip. Everything was fairly uneventful, at least until we arrived at the airport in Guatemala City. We passed signs proclaiming that this place was going to be the most modern airport in Central America. They weren't finished yet, and we walked clear out of the terminal without even realizing we had left. But once we figured out that the parking garage did not lead to the main shopping area, we turned around and got our first quetzals.
Being brave and daring adventurers, we avoided the easy taxi ride for 50 quetzals and instead jumped on the local bus for 1 quetzal, thereby saving us 48 of the very cool looking ones. It was quite a nice bus really, and we were entertained by the sellers who jumped on the bus with pens, WOW! gum, and strange light bulb key-chains. We proceeded through the shabby outer areas of the city to the center and jumped off at the central market. After hanging out at the Plaza Mayor we headed off to find food and stumbled across our first Internet cafe.
The plan is now to head down to Antigua for a couple days before hitting the Lake District. We'll update more extensively later..we just wanted to let everyone know that we've arrived safely and are enjoying ourselves so far.
The next step is to find food and a bathroom.
