Athens became one of those cities that just won't let you leave. After two days and numerous debacles of various kinds I was able to leave the city. I did however find that once I was forced to stroll through the city streets again and again I began to develop a soft spot for Athens. Something like getting to like a mangy dog.
I was determined to skip the Greek freeway scene leaving the city (the road I knew to well come in) so I chose the less conventional rout through the island of Salomina. My map showed to small little connections to the mainland which signified Ferry transportation. So, I put my faith in Michelin once again and headed out hoping that the scribbled directions in my notebook and my blind faith will lead me to where I wanted to go. Amazingly it worked. After navigating the streets of Athens I hopped onto a Ferry boat and for 80 cents, five minutes later, I arrived on the shores of Salomina. On this strange island I had my own private road down on the seashore. I passed a few gypsy groups on the way and looked happily at the crowded urban entanglement and the busy highway about 1 Km across, on the other side, far away from my serene island.
As I arrived on the western tip of the Island I could now make out a small port and a guy tossing a rope off a small ferry. I asked him where I should pay and where the ferry is going, but alas, he didn't speak any English. So, he rushed me up the ferry and, going 'blind' again, I got on. Five minutes later we were back on the mainland and I was just a bit closer to my destination.
As the Temperatures climbed, hovering around 35C in mid day, I finally arrived at the camping site near Isthima, about 10Km from Korinthos. 80Km today meant a long day tomorrow.
