As I left Sabaudia this morning it was clear that the weather was not going to be kind today. Never the less, the views were especially magnificent as I passed through the sea side cities of S. Felice Circo, Terracina and Sperlonga. No steep climbs or descents, the road remained relatively flat through out. except a few seaside cliffs here and there the ride was fairly easy. At S. Felice Circo I stopped to brows through a local market on one of the side streets.
As I returned to my bike, covering by saddle bags against the pending rain, a some-what disheveled older man approached me. After a few sentences in mutilated Italian we passed on to English, it was then when I discovered a happy, adventures and worldly chap who was very interested in my voyage. As a result he offered me some directions, which I lived to regret later, yet in addition he offered me a spare light for his suggested route through the Sperionga tunnels. I accepted and we continued towards his car.
After hading me the light, the man continued to search his car for various objects he could give me: he pulled out a vest, a small umbrella, a bicycle horn and roll of tape (which I later accepted), I politely refused but thanked him for his generosity. He later asked me to send him a postcard form Israel "that would be very nice!" he said, and departed.
What an encounter. I later used the light and tape as I walked my bike through the tunnels. I will summarize the experience by describing the shear exhilaration of being alive after leaving the final tunnel. I therefor vow that from now on I will take the detour!
As I left Terracina it began to rain, getting stronger as the time passed. Left with no other possibilities, since all camp sites on the way were closed, I found a relatively cheap hotel in Gaeta where I will spend the night. Hopefully tomorrow the weather will improve.
