Singapore

Singapore is a great big city. It's really big; and really clean. We had read that this city had a thing about cleanliness and it is much cleaner than any American city. But not absolutely litter free. We were looking and we did see a few scrapes of paper. One travel writer said you could eat off the floors of the subway; but the floors couldn't be that clean because we found a derelict sleeping on a landing on the stairs to one subway stop who had taken the trouble to put down a layer of newspapers before he laid down.

We had taken the trans-causeway bus from JB to Singapore and stayed until evening. Besides being clean, Singapore is a great place to shop. We found a High Sierra pack to replace the one that had died on us in Australia, and Arvid found a pair of Columbia brand hiking shorts, with all those pockets, to replace the one he has which are wearing out. At Barnes and Noble we picked up a collection of W. Somerset Maugham short stories written while he was in Malaysia, also Sold For Silver by Janet Lim. Then we finished our Singapore visit by having a drink at Raffles Hotel Long Bar. [GPS 01 17.720N 103 51.230E]

Arvid's stomach was exhausted from battling all the strange food he'd eating last night and the only thing he thought would sooth it was a Big Mac and fries. Irina had no sympathy since she had warned him not to eat those spicy sauces they served with the seafood, but she did join him for a double cheese burger. It was like comfort food. The Big Mac costs $3.80 Singapore dollars, which have an exchange rate of about S$1.47 to $1.00 US. A six pack of Tiger Beer costs S$17.67 in the stores.
