Chris and Endang knocked off work today to drive us to Mt. Bromo. [07 56.409S 112 57.162E] We took off early at 7 AM because there was a good likelihood we'd get delayed around where a mud volcano has buried several villages near Sidoarjo. The mud hasn't stopped flowing and has caused traffic to be detoured from the toll road. Fortunately we made it to Bromo just as the clouds were dissipated by the midday sun, so we had a great view.
What is called Bromo are really 3 volcanic peaks in the large Tengger caldera at the center of which is Bromo. There is a fantastic view from the ridge of the caldera and when you descend to the caldera floor it's like a prehistoric landscape; before animal life evolved. From the base of Bromo we rode horses up the steep and treacherous ascent to a landing. From there we climbed 254 steps, and carefully peeked over the edge into the smoking crater. At the base of the mountain is a Hindu temple where you can buy bouquets of flowers to throw into the abyss to appease the gods or for good luck. Since the volcano had erupted in 2002 killing several tourists we bought the flowers, even though we are not superstitious.
