Bali bombing memorial [08 43.036S 115 10.472E]

Kuta, Bali has been the scene of some very serious terrorist bombings and the tourist trade has still not fully recovered from what the street vendors tell us. In the first incident in 2002 two bombs went off simultaneously less than a kilometer from our hotel. That was a huge one that destroyed buildings for blocks around ground zero. Alvin, the owner of the Secret Gardens Bar, adjacent to our hotel, told us that debris fell from the sky onto his building after the bombs went off. Two more nearly simultaneous suicide bombing incidents occurred in 2005: one at Jimbaran beach area to the north where two bombs went off at either end of a line of a half dozen beach front seafood restaurants; and another suicide bombing in the Kuta Square shopping area near here. Together 26 people were killed in the 2005 incidents. We're going to visit all the locations. Today we go to the 2002 bombing ground zero, where there is a large monument dedicated to the over 200 dead. You'd be hard pressed to find a single person on the island who has any sympathy for the terrorists.
