Feb. 6, 2007

We've been healing up from our rough travel in Flores. Slowly exploring the city of Kuta; seeing just what civilized conveniences are available. Outside of our little warren of streets, we've found the beach along which a larger road, Jalan Panta Kuta runs. The main feature of the beach, other than the great surf and sand, are the lines of surf boards standing erect in the sand. On the other side of our little enclave is another larger road called Jalan Legian, two lanes of traffic, if we walk down a ways we come to Kuta Square, a shopping district, including a large department store, the Matahari. Down the beach road is a shopping mall called Discovery Land. This is good because we need to buy a new bag. The one we bought in Australia is ripped and falling apart. It was turning out to be too big anyway. So now we can get a real backpack; the kind without wheels and handles; the kind you actually carry on your back. Kuta is the first real city we've been in since Darwin so we hope to find something here.

We sorted through our belongings to figure out what we really needed for the rest of the trip and what we could send home. We make the hard decision to pitch our flippers but keep the masks and snorkels.  We hope we can get our stuff to fit into the remaining High Sierra bag and the new backpack. We've also accumulated some souvenirs. A lot has to be shipped out. We promised Robertus, the cousin of our guide Ryan in Moni that we'd send him some books for the library he is starting for the children in the village. Irina gets a dozen children's books at the Gramaria and we ship them out off to Moni. Finding a cargo company requires us to walk out to the district called Legian, just north of Kuta. If you know the area you can tell just how little of the place we've actually seen to date. We're still mostly vegetating by the hotel pool, and, when we feel strong enough, slowly exploring further and further out.
