This morning we board a four wheel drive bus for our trip across outback desert from Cairns to Darwin. This tour is by Desert Venturer www.desertventurer.com.au
We travel up from Cairns into the Atherton Tablelands. Our first stop is Millstream Falls, which is Australia's widest falls. [GPS 17 38.548S 145 27.455E] We stop at Mt. Surprise (don't see any mountain here) for lunch and meet Russell the snake man, and play with his snakes (just the non-poisonous ones). We continue on to Georgetown for a rest stop. [GPS 18 17.375S 143 32.827E] Finally, we reach Croydon which was a boomtown back in the 1880's when gold was discovered around here. We take a refreshing swim in Lake Belmore, keeping an eye out for fresh water crocks, 'snappies'. They are not dangerous but elusive. Then we have dinner and bed down at the Croydon Club Hotel and Pub established in 1887. [GPS] 18 12.138S 142 14.630E] The stairs are tall, the floors are creaky and the rooms are small. Also, some dog crapped in the hallway and it was still there in the morning when we left. Could have been there for weeks. We'd advise you to stay somewhere else, but there isn't anything else out here for hundreds of miles.
