Nuremberg
Entry 2 of 4 | show all | print this entry |
Yesterday I caught the train from Heidelberg to Nuremberg, which took 4 hours with train changes in Osterberken and Wurzburg. Nuremberg is an interesting place, it was completely destroyed in WWII but they've reconstructed many of the important buildings such as the churches, castle and town walls very authentically, but all the other buildings are modern. I arrived quite late and went to a big museum which had lots of furniture, clothes, fancy household items and jewellery from the 17th-18th centuries. There was a lot more in the museum but I didn't get time to see it all before it closed. I then went walking around and got completely lost, but eventually found the Christmas market in a town square beneath the cathedral. The Christmas market has lots Christmas lights and stalls selling Christmas decorations and Christmasy food. I bought some candied nuts, a packet of delicious spiced gingerbread biscuits, some stollen, gluhwein (mulled wine) and a hotdog with saurkraut in it. I would have liked to have gone out on the town last night but I'm still on Perth time and so fell asleep at 8pm. The hostel room was bright as day all night because it had no blinds, and at 3am a croud of drunk poms came in yelling and screaming and singing that 'ba ba bum ba' song and I've been wide awake since then. The sun has risen now, so I'm going to go and look around town.

I am glad I can read what you are doing during your travels. It sounds like a lot of fun! Is the coat I bought you keeping you warm enough? Please keep writing .

Keep writing. Very interesting!
L has got some great new gear - back pack and so on. You will see when she gets there.
Nuremberg was the place that the uncle came from in the Nutcracker story. The one who bought the nut cracker for Fritz and Mary. Are there lots of nutcrackers around?
If you see any really good costume museums of around the 1500's to 1600's will you give me the names... show all
