Hooray hoorah I have arrived in Europe. Right now I'm in Heidelberg and I'm so tired I can't spell properly or think what to write because I landed in Frankfurt at 5:15am after a 20 hour flight and I can't check into my hostel till 3 (10pm Perth time). Both sectors of the flight were very pleasant. On the way to Singapore I read a bit and watched The Jammed and The Simpsons movie and the time went really fast. I've never bothered watching a movie on the plane before because it's a good opportunity to catch up on books I want to read and the sound and picture quality is so bad on those little screens. I was so happy to get on the Singapore-Frankfurt flight because I was convinced I wouldn't get on cos it was overbooked and I was on a standby ticket. But just 25 minutes before the departure time they told me I had a seat. I was very happy not to spend another 24 hours in Singapore and to spend a day in Heidelberg instead. The next flight was 12 hours and although I couldn't get to sleep I didn't get horrifically bored. It seemed quite a momentous occasion when the plane landed because I was visiting a whole new continent I'd never been to before and for some strange reason I've always had this bizzarre notion that Europe might be a fictional land like Middle Earth or something. There's a big train station below Frankfurt airport, so I caught a train straight to Heidelberg, about an hour south. I walked around for ages trying to find my hostel but it was closed so I left my bag at some other random hotel. Then I walked all around town and up a steep hill to a partially ruined castle, which was very interesting and had great views over Heidelberg and the Neckar River. The town is very pretty because all the buildings are 300-400 years old and full of character. After exploring the castle I walked back down the hill to an old bridge with some statues on it, then went to the cathedral where someone was playing the organ. I then went for another long walk trying to fill in time until I can check in to the hostel and have been walking ever since because all the interesting things to see are buildings and statues. I didn't think it was very cold earlier this morning but after spending all day outside I now realise it's freezing. I've learned my lesson and will wear my warm coat every day from now on! Because it was so freezing I went into an internet cafe but it's hard to think of what to look up and what to write. Hopefully my next blog is a bit more coherent if I ever get round to writing another one. Tonight I'll go walking again to see the Christmasy things, and tomorrow I'll go to Nuremberg.
