So, its been one week in Porto Novo (east side of Benin). For me I really like Porto Novo better than Cotonou- its a smaller place, more tranquil and lots more interaction with the locals.  Here we are a bit of a spectacle, the children run out of nowhere crying yovo yovo bonsoir (a greeting for all of us white folk).  Its part of song they learn to become familiar with white people and not be afraid.  Initially this was cute, but it becomes tiring hearing yovo yovo every couple steps.

The only form of transportation here is moto-taxi (Zem or Kekenon).  This was actually my first time on any sort of motorcycle- what an initiation!!  Oxfam has kindly provided us with helmets, but there is still much to learn about zems.  Bartering is the norm, and often we are presented with the yovo price, but we learn quickly.
Action Sociale
Action Sociale

As for work, myself and 4 others volunteer at Action Sociale with their HIV/AIDS program. Last week there was a bit of confusion, but we have our work plan laid out now.  However, one thing that has become evident is the importance of being flexible and not having too many expectations as things change from day to day to reflect the current priorities.  Today I went to two local schools to promote our upcoming training (Feb.20, 21, 22).  This training is being done by professionals on the topics (HIV/AIDS, gender, training).  Our goal is to have six schools send 4 of their students to this training. This will also be an opportunity to share information and learn more about the local culture.

Aside from that, things are going well.  I have a very nice host family, my own bedroom and bathroom.  Melanie, my host mother is very kind and makes the best yogurt!  This past weekend we were able to take a pirrod (not sure of the spelling- a long wooden boat) through the lagoon to a village called Aguegue- that was quite the experience!! Then Sunday we went to a nearby beach; Oceanic Plage Bar- it was beautful!! Will load some pictures if possible.
