To get to San Rafael only took us around 3.5 hours through very pampas type of landscape. Flat, flat and more flat. And not much vegetation at all. Only when we got to San Rafael, since the city has 2 good rivers coming down from the Andes. Jeff and I were both surprised how big San Rafael was, had not really expected it.
Checked into HI hostel Tierrasoles around 4 blocks from the terminal. Recommended! Only pesos 17 and a very good vibe. Beautiful backyard area and good people. Ended up staying 3 nights in San Rafael, just because we liked it so much.
We did Canon de Atuel the day after, a great trip that lasted from 9 in the morning till 9 in the evening. Through great landscapes, and we also did a rafting trip towards the end. Only class 2 but enjoyable anyway.
The day after we went to the beach...or whatever you may call it. It was up to one of the diques in the Valle Grande. Not a proper beach, but when you live 15 hours from the coast of Argentina you canīt really ask too many questions when it comes to beaches. Was fun anyway. Just the fact that we drove inland to get to the beach, and that we had to walk through a "mountain" pass to get there made it worthwhile.
