Stayed in Backpackers Rest in Masvingo, quite a shithole if you ask me. Not a place to be recommended. But then there are not many proper backpacker places in Zimbabwe...and hardly any backpackers ;-)
But a gem of a cafe is "The Hidden Garden Cafe". Had 3 meals there, really delicious.
Took the local bus towards Great Zimbabwe, the minibus going to Morgensterne. Then there was a 2km walk to the ruins, through a beautiful hotel.
Great Zimbabwe is the name given to the remains, sometimes referred to as the Great Zimbabwe Ruins, of an ancient Southern African city. theempire ruled territory now falling within the modern states of Zimbabwe (which took its name from this city) and Mozambique.
The ruins can be broken down into three distinct groups. I only did the Hill Complex and the famous Great Enclosure. I really enjoyed walking around there, and I was quite impressed by Great Enclosure. See pictures.
I also had kind of a scary lizard experience up in Hill Complex. Suddenly I was surrounded by over 50 small lizards...being very hungry. Of course they were not dangerous for me, since they are only maximum 15 cm long, but with that amount! A bit scary. I gave them back their stone and left.
Then back to Masvingo and bus towards Beit Bridge, the border post to Africa. Just before the border, the bus stopped and loaded of around 100 boxes of cigarettes. Loaded onto a pick up to be smuggled over the border. Fun! :-) Getting over the border took ages.
