Ever since Mari started with her new job in Cologne, both of us are living parallel lives. She wrote an entire entry on our parallel lives and her new life in Cologne. You can read it at Mari's travelpod. She also describes other aspects of Cologne, her new favourite place in Germany. I won't even start comparing Stuttgart and Germany. The mere thought of being in Stuttgart makes me depressed. People there are depressing. They have this pretentious shyness but at the same time think that they are someone "better". They are really proud of their cars ("Porsche", "Daimler") and of their achievements. But they don't know how to live. I seriously doubt that anyone in Swabia is alive.
The purpose of this travelpod
The topic of this travelpod are Stuttgart (the heart of Swabia) and Cologne (the heart of North Rhine Westfalia)
Some general info on Cologne
The city itself
According to Wikipedia, Cologne is Germany's fourth-largest city after Berlin, Hamburg and Munich, and is the largest city both in the German Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia and within the Rhine-Ruhr Metropolitan Area, one of the major European metropolitan areas with more than 10 million inhabitants. It is one of the oldest cities in Germany, having been founded by the Romans in the year 30 BCE. Cologne was granted the status of a Roman "city" in the year 50 CE. If you want to know more about Cologne, I recommend reading the Wikipidia entry on Cologne. Wikipedians have done an awesome job.
More valuable information can be found at the website of the city of Cologne. At this website you can find detailed information about events in Cologne and much much more.
Getting there and away
You can reach Cologne by any means of transport: land, air, water. I recommend going there by train or some other public transport. Traffic is impossible in Cologne. If you come from a country where people don't drive like crazy, you should not steer an automobile through the busy streets of the Rhine metropolis. If you plan a longer stay in Europe, or Germany, I recommend the website of Deutsche Bahn (German rail). They give you a lot of information with an incredible depth of detail. You can buy your tickets online and print them on a piece of paper (only thing you need is a credit card or a German bank account). If you buy a Bahn Card, you will get some serious discount. Especially if you are a student, a Bahn Card is cheap and is gonna save you a lot of money, if you stay in Germany for longer than a day. For getting around I recommend taxi (rather cheap) and public transport (even cheaper). This saves you all the stress and you can soak in the beauty and dirt of Cologne.
What's going on in my life right now?
During the last month, I had two job interviews
Pondering about what I should do with my future, I concluded that it would be a good idea to study biology. Nature is the most important thing on earth. Without nature, none of this could be happening. I couldn't be sitting here in my wet little flat in Stuttgart and type something on my computer that you can read, wherever you are. The internet wouldn't be here without nature. Travelpod wouldn't be here. You, my friends, wouldn't be here. Moreover, Nature is greatest artist of all of us. I think I could learn a lot from Nature by studying it intensely. M.C. Escher, one of my favorite artists, also learned a lot from - if not everything - from nature. In order to be close to Mari, I gonna study at the University of Bonn or the University of Düsseldorf. I think it's gonna be fun. Honestly. Studying should be fun. The place where I study at the moment is anything but fun...
I've only been to Cologne for a couple of weeks, but I'm already in love with it. I can feel it's a place of possibilities. Things just happen as you live. You don't have to struggle the slow death of the ambitious artist, because your life is all about the arts. I can picture how it's gonna be. Studying, working part-time, trying to sell my work to picture agencies. I gonna be with Mari. I gonna be close to my friends from High School. Frank lives right around the corner. The girls live on the same block. I will introduce those characters to you later.
Right now you should relax and turn the slide show on. Get a first impression of Cologne. Those are not the nice tourist shots. I didn't take my big camera along. I took all of those photos with my cell phone. Enjoy!
