By the way, you can use the taxi from the port of Tallinn to the city centre. It's not expensive. Just make sure that you check the fares before you enter the car. You can find a little sign with the fares in the window of the taxi. Prices may differ up to 300 or 500 % !!!
Back to our hostel. Don't go there! It's name is "Vana Tom" and it's in the middle of Tallinn. They pretend to be a cool and cozy backpacker place in the internet. They are not. They tell you that they have wireless internet, but they don't. I don't think it even exists. I kept on asking different people of the staff. Nobody seemed to know about it for real. But nobody wanted to admit it either.
People there are very loud (the staff). They bring their friends over and drink tea all the time (also at eight in the morning). Generally, we just didn't like the atmosphere. It was obvious that those people just wanted our money and nothing else. They were not nice to us. We wanted to leave our heavy backpack there, because our bus to Russia leaves tonight at 11p.m. . They accepted to keep our backpack, but only with a grumble on their faces (I'm not sure whether you can say it like that in English).
Tallinn is nice theses days. Quite warm. No snow. It feels like spring or fall. There are not so many tourists now and after 8pm the city seems to be deserted. Good for taking pictures of buildings. Not so good for taking pictures of people. The first day here was a bit depressing. It remdinded me of cold and grey days in Riga when I was younger. Anyway, since I have this little finnish engergy pack with me, I'm fine. She just makes me very happy.
At the moment we are sitting at café Reval, drinking Latte. Mari is knitting a scarf or something crazy. She knitted a beautiful sweater for me in only two weeks. Imagine!! She can do all kinds of stuff. She can even make bread with her own hands. All she needs is some wheat and a stove. Amazing.
I already miss Finland. Heslinki is such a beautiful city. I actually felt more comfortable there than here in Tallinn. Of course, this is due to our hostel. It all depends on where you stay. There are nice hostels in Tallinn. Like the old backpackers. Just go there when you come here and stay away from the Vana Tom. You shouldn't come here during Christmas. Everything is closed and deserted. Before Christmas is a good time to be here. Or for New Year's. Anyway, tonight we will be going to Saint Petersburg. Excitement. Adventure. Fun. Sleep. And lots of good photos. :-).
I'm happy to read from many of you that your are already sensible for the Global Warming issue. It's not like I wanna be a prophet or something. I just think our world is the most important thing that we have. I couldn't take pictures of anything beautiful without the earth, because it simply wouldn't be here. Or maybe with global warming, the planet is gonna stay, but nothing is gonna be on it. Pictures of deserts are interesting. But only if you have something else for a change sometimes. So keep up equipping your cars with bio-diesel or gas, put solar panels on your house. Take the paper bags instead of the plastic bags. Buy a German car, not one of those heave road cruisers. Maybe use your bike once in while. You know how we foreigners find other foreigners when we come to the USA. We are the only ones who walk around or go by bike ;-).
Sending you lots of love from Tallinn.
