A Day in Vantaa

After a long and healthy sleep I get up. Jasmin and Pia are already gone. Pia drops Jasmin off at the pre-school in the mornings. Then she goes to work. I start the day with a glass of milk. The milk tastes so much better in Finland. I also prepare an egg for myself and eat. This is my first day off work. This is the first day when I don't really have to do anything. I feel kind of lost. Everything is so quiet and peaceful around me. First I marvel at the soothing atmosphere. Then I get bored. I take out the Nintendo DS and play some games. Then I get bored. So I get the computer and start to learn Finnish.

The Finnish language is quite complicated. There are 16 cases. The vocabulary is from another planet. Most people say that the Finnish and Hungarian language are very similar. That's not true. They are only grouped into one group, because they are so different from all the other indo-european languages. If you are interested in learning Finnish, there are some excellent websites around.

One of them is provided by the Finnish state TV (YLE): www.yle.fi/opinportti/supisuomea/

Another one is provided by the European Union: www.oneness.vu.lt

I use both of them. Don't expect it to be easy. It's very difficult and frustrating sometimes. When you have your first conversation running, however, the feeling of achievement makes you forget all the painful studying.

After a while Mari gets up. We eat together and do nothing. It's quite strange not to be at work. For her even more than for me. Around noon we walk to the city centre of Vantaa. A typical Finnish town. We meet Pia at work, then we get Jasmin and go out for lunch. The rest of the day just goes by. In the evening the girls go to a club. I'm much too tired for this so I stay at home and play with Pia's X-Box and enjoy satellite TV. Before the girls leave, I have to take pictures of their party outfits.
