I'm now newly arrived in Baltic country number two, namely Latvia. As is the usual theme with my arrival in new places I am again somewhat knackered due to the 6:00 start this morning for the bus down here from Estonia but at least it's not as bad as many of my other journeys.
I'll start off by finishing up with my time in Estonia, after finishing with Talinn which was a very nice town but a bit lacking in life at the moment I thought I'd check out Tartu which is supposedly the spiritual centre of Estonia. If that's the case it would seem that they need some kind of pick me up because the most notable feature that I found in Tartu was the emptiness. I know this isn't the busiest time of year but I was there on a Friday and a Saturday night when you'd think there'd be plenty of people about especially when 20% are supposed to be students but unfortunately that didn't seem to be the case, I guess they were all being conscientious and were at home studying. To add to it all, despite my extensive efforts last night to find a pub to watch the Australia vs Uruguay WC Qualifier any place that had a TV either only had one channel or basically just didn't have the game, I did find one place that had the Rally of Australia of all things on, so that was a disappointment on top of what certainly wasn't the most memorable of places that I've seen this year. Anyway, with that behind me I'm now in another new city and new country and already the hostel here at least has a completely different pace to Estonia. There certainly isn't any shortage of backpackers here at least, sometimes it is nice to go to some quieter place and escape the chaos of backpacker life but at the same time it does tend to get pretty boring pretty quickly when there's no one else around so it should be a welcome change from the last few days.
Anyway, I'd better get out there and explore as usual and I'll keep you all posted on how I go in this neck of the woods.
