Napoli has the reputation equivalent to Compton from what I've read and what others have told me.  It's known to be crime infested, dirty and poor.  I, too, was hesitant about coming here but I thought if I can live in LA, I can visit Napoli for few days.  I heard the train station is the worst area of all and I was more cognizant of my belongings than I have in the past.  Once I arrived, I was fully ready to fight off any mobsters that came along my way, but I wasn't disturbed or harassed by anyone.  It's either they were scared off by my strong physique or I just looked too damn poor even for them.  In any case, i safely made it to my hostel with all of my body intact.
But Napoli does have its appeal.  For starters, this is where Pizza was invented and you can have the best pizza in the world.  Ever since I've been in Italy, I've been having pizza at least twice a day.  That's because it's the cheapest and the most convenient option out there.  Here in Napoli, there are couple of famous pizza places that's been competing with each other for decades.  They're both very good and cheap but one was clearly better than the other, at least to me.  It was the best pizza I've ever had and I'm sure I'm not alone in making that statement.  We ordered two pizzas, one ham and mushrooms, and the other, combination pizza which consisted of 8 different slices.  Brilliant, I thought.
Yes, Napoli is dirty and it smells, too, but as far as all the bad reputation goes, I thought much was unwarranted.  Even walking close to midnight in small alleys, I didn't really feel threatened.  Also you can use Napoli as a central hub to visit Pompeii, Capri, Almalfi coast, and other surrounding cities.  At the end of the day, Napoli is a good place to visit and afterwards, you can claim you had the best pizza in the world.
