I only spent one night in Venice and I was able to tour the whole city.  What's most appealing about Venice is that there are no cars.  Taxis, metros, cabs are all made up of boats.  Getting around Venice is one difficult task though.  The city is a complete maze and you're guaranteed to get lost.  You'll see countless tourists walking around with their big map spread out, trying to pinpoint their whereabouts.  I, on the other hand, just decided to roam through the city without worrying about getting lost and ended up locating some great photo ops.  I recommend doing the same thing if you're ever in Venice.
While getting around was bit easy for me, finding a place to stay was something else.  All of the hostels were booked when I looked it up in Budapest so I just decided to show up.  After taking the night train from Budapest, I arrived at 7 am.  Upon arrival, I called every hostel listed but didn't have much luck again which meant I had to resort to hotels.  Even finding availability in hotels was tough but I manage to finally locate one for $150.  Well, it was either spend $150 or sleep on the train station, so I decided on the former.
For $150, I expected at least Best Western status, but this was worse than the sticky-6 back home.  I even had to share the bathroom with four other rooms.  Well, I guess that's Venice for you.  Nonetheless, I did enjoy finally getting to sleep alone in a quiet setting.  Even if I wanted to stay another night, I couldn't afford it, so I decided to head down to Florence, where Renaissance all started.

Re: venice
Hey there,
There was a pizza place that was very popular on my lonely planet guide and it was quite good. unfortunately, i don't remember the name or have the guidebook anymore. But, in venice, there are lots of small pizza places that will cost around $3-4 a slice. sorry can't be much of a help here...
