After spending few days as a tourist, I wanted to go out and feel the city as a local. I took the first morning train to Brighton which is about one hour south of London. This city gets lot of tourists during the summer but the cold, rainy weather has shielded all but few tourists this time of the year. Train ride was excellent. It gave me glimpse of outside of London which is exactly what I wanted. Upon arrival, I abandoned my guide book and just started walking. I probably walked about 5 miles, roaming through the city and the small streets in between. Some were impressive but most of the main streets were crowded with American brand stores. Even here, I couldn't really get away from Starbucks.
Back at the hostel, I met two guys from Spain and decided to watch a championship futbol game at a local pub. Little did I know at that time, I was joining them on a suicide mission. The game was between Valencia and Chelsea, both representing their prospective league, Spain and England. Walking into the pub, we understood we were going into a hostile crowd and sure enough, it was full of English men chanting for their team. To make things worse, Valencia scored a goal as soon as we walked in. Fortunately for us, Chelsea ended up winning the game 2-1. It probably saved our lives.
Having gone through such experience together, two Spaniards and I became very close. It's funny how you come so far from home, only to realize how similar we all are. They're both from Barcelona which probably meant I'll go visit them when I'm there sometime in December. From what these guys tell me, I can't wait to get to Barcelona. Stay tuned...
