Waking up in Faro is spectacular. The house has external electric shades (I’m sure they have an actual name) that lockdown all of the windows, making it like a fortress when you sleep. Since we had arrived at night, I hadn’t been able to take in the view, and as I stumbled into the living room, trying to remember which switch it was that would unseal the apartment and let in the outside world, I definitely wasn’t prepared for what was on the other side. Blue skies, sunshine and greenish blue waves breaking a stones throw away from the window I was standing at. After a whirlwind tour of London, Julia and I decided that today would be our bum day, enjoying the beach and the house. It was a series of champagne and fruit drinks, sunshine and sunglasses, sandals and music, and of course Germans. We only ventured out once to go to the grocery store, which was our first time driving into the city with our little toy car. Julia is getting better at driving standard, I still need practice. That said, neither one of us are good at stopping so we’ve managed to take every turn and speed bump without really slowing down. I think we’re definitely given the citizens of Faro something to fear. We found the grocery store quite by accident, but it would have been hard to miss. This thing was bigger than anything I have seen in the States, except perhaps a Costco or Sam’s. It was huge and everything was in Portuguese, so we’re not entirely sure what we’re eating, but so far it’s been good. Portuguese wine has proven to be yummy and cheap, a combo I embrace. After an early evening siesta, I impressed even myself with a meal of Pasta Bolognese and sauteed broccoli. With all things foreign to work with, it turned out pretty delicious...
