Touchdown in Greece and so far it's looking sunny. Last night was, um, "eventful," what with all the chanting, drunken Liverpool fans. I didn't think people would have so many sports chants to run through across several hours. I also didn't think they'd come back at 4am and start all over again. Needless to say, we didn't get a particularly great rest. Maybe we can take solace in the knowledge that most of them don't have reservations for Athens or even tickets for the game!
Then again, we don't have reservations either. The first thing we did upon landing here was head straight for the station, make train reservations and start dialing hotels. Everything's still booked. Soooo . . . . we're gambling on a rooftop space at a hostel southeast of the center. Apparently they always have room up there (sleeping bag essential) when they're full up room-wise. Which means we're in for a second night of not too much rest. But when you've gotta sleep. . . . .
In better news, I managed to arrange our ferry tickets out to the islands. With Athens jammed to the gills, we decided we're better off getting the hell out and coming back later. So, first thing in the morning - good sleep or no - we're making for Piraeus and taking a ferry to Santorini. We don't have reservations down there either, but I think we'll be able to take our chances and luck out a little easier away from all the football action. In any case, it isn't high season, nor a weekend, so something should work out.
Next stop, Athens. . . .
