This is our last night in Deutschland before we move on to adventures elsewhere. I'm going to miss the nightly sampling of new domestic beers and the mouth-watering quantity of booze in each beer garden maß (which incidentally I haven't indulged in since Munich!). But we've already spent about two weeks total here, and with Mayu's trip in a limited time frame, it's time to make a move.

Hamburg has been much different than I expected, given its reputation, but at least I've gotten to know it better. It's certainly not among my favorite German cities - and it's light years away from contending with Munich - but it does have its own attractions. Mayu and I did a little more exploring the past couple evenings, peeking around the remnants of the old town in the city center tonight and taking in the seedy underbelly along the Reeperbahn. On the latter actually, I was surprised to see how relatively tame Europe's largest red-light district was. Compared to Amsterdam, there's nowhere near as much dodginess and sleaze, and it seems like in recent years the area has taken a distinctly "proper" turn with the growth of musical theatre and other mainstream entertainment. Even still, a walk through one of the numerous sex shops was more than enough to give us an overdose on vice.

Speaking of vice, we're off to Amsterdam tomorrow. Here's hoping the weather cooperates. Despite muggy, overcast conditions for most of today, we've been pretty damn lucky. Cross yer fingers. . .
