Andechs is beautifully set on a forested hill above the Ammersee. Due to all the foliage, you can't really see any of the lake, but the church itself is a fine attraction all the same. We made the requisite visit, taking in all the baroque splendor, then moved on to the day's real priority. As I believe I mentioned before, the monastery has brewed its own beer for centuries, so it's a popular place for locals (and foreign visitors) to go and get boozed up
Mayu ordered a formidable schweinehaxe (pork leg) and potato salad, which she not surprisingly needed some assistance with. I had a lighter meal of sausages with sauerkraut and a brez'n (pretzel). Good stuff, if very caloric! Jim and I indulged in the standard helles (light) beer for a couple maßes, but he made it clear that I should avoid the dark doppelbock, which is notoriously fierce stuff. I was rather surprised to find him later dipping into one after about three maßbiers of helles! All this in the time it took me to down two. Not good.
Jim later disappeared for an unsettlingly long time, so I had to go hunt him down. Wandering past some of the stalls, I heard someone inside one of them snoring away. Sure enough, it was Jim! After I finally got him up and out of there, he steadfastly refused to go back to the table. Instead we went to the car, where he said he'd just sit and wait while I got the others. So then we come back and the guy's sleeping on the asphalt with his head resting on the curb!! Poor bastard!
It's been a lot of fun and once again an absolutely amazing day weather-wise. Fortunately I don't think I'll have a hangover in the morning, but I'm not sure I can say the same about Jim!
