We found a fantastic circuit through Kohi Point Scenic Reserve, which started from near the center of the tourist section of town. It took us up hundreds of steps (up and down, up and down) along a ridgeline through coastal forest and out to a stunning view looking toward Motuhora Island, then back around to a quiet beach called Otarawairere Bay. The weather couldn’t have been better with warm air, cool breezes, blue skies and brilliant turquoise waters as you’ll see.
This forest reserve is designated as a reintroduction site for Kiwi birds, though we didn’t see any (again, we’re hiking during daylight, and they’re nocturnal). We did manage to catch glimpses of many black backed gulls, a pair of oystercatchers, some shags, a tern & a fantail.
The longest stretch of beach in Otarawairere Bay was covered with polished shells not yet broken to the size of sand. We lingered for a while, playing with shells, dipping in the water, and soaking up the sun for a bit…who says we’re getting to be middle aged? Then we continued back on the trail to complete our loop, which took us past the top of Wairere Falls.
After completing the loop we wandered through town a bit more, finding Muriwai Cave, a sacred place where a Maori princess once lived, then to find our way to the base of the waterfall we had viewed from above: Wairere Falls. Although the water didn’t look clean enough for a dip, it was a picturesque, long cascade. There's an attached video of the falls...
UPDATE: WE'VE ADDED ANOTHER VIDEO OF WILDLIFE AND BEACH VIEWS ALONG THE KOHI POINT SCENIC RESERVE :) CHECK THE LAST IMAGE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE BLOG...
Another great day in EnZed!
