El Chalten is one of Pategonia´s busiest tourist spots due to the fact the little village is situated within hiking distance to to the famous Fitzroy mountain range.
It was really cold & windy while we were here but we wanted to do at least one trek in Pategonia, so a one day trek in El Chalten was chosen over a 3 day trek further south in Torres Del Paine. Also the fact that there was no entrance fee into this national park helped sway our decision
There is absolutely nothing to do here in the village, it really only is a base for hikers & nature enthusiasts, neither of which we are. Thankfully, Bill, an American guy in our room, kept us entertained with his eukelele playing.
After spending our first night in our baltic cold rooms, it was time for the hike in the morning. If we had the proper gear like everyone else in El Chalten we could have classified what we did as a hike, instead what we did was more of a walk to ´Laguna de Los Tres´. We stuck out like sore thumbs. We left at 12 & it took us 3.5 hours to get up to the Lagoon. There was some great scenery on the way up in fairness. It was a handy walk, with the last hour being the toughest as there was a steep enough climb. When we reached the Lagoon, the sight in front of us was impressive. The snow covered Fitzroy mountain range with the torquoise coloured lagoon in front of them. Where we were was covered in snow but unfortunately due to cloudy weather the summit of the Fitzroy was not visible. The water was really clear in the lagoon and was drinkable. After the obligatory photos we began the 3 hour walk back down to El Chalten. On the way we stopped for something to eat & met an American guy & his mate who were camping on the mountain for 7 weeks, each day hoping it is clear enough to climb to the summit of the Fitzroy. They were fairly suprised with our answer when they asked us how long have we been here, to which we replied ´got here yesterday, leaving tomorrow´. That´s what we mean by saying we stuck out like sore thumbs.
We were really only here to do a trek & once that was done we left early the next day.
