Where I stayed
mar del plata
Mar Del Plata is the most popular of the Argentine beach destinations. It is mostly middle class Argentinians who spend their holidays here, the upper class go to Punto Del Este in Uruguay which we will hopefully visit at a later stage.
We rolled into Mar Del Plata on the best and most expensive bus we have traveled on in South America so far. It turned out Pa must have been wiping tenners with his arse that morning as he booked us on a 5 star coach for only a 5 hour journey.
We checked into our luxury hotel, had a look around the nearby beaches and for a change had McDonald's for dinner
"Oh BLAST it", a man didn't even have room for a stroll on the beach with his sandals.
The following morning we woke at 9am to check out and went straight to the station to book our bus to El Calafate. We were informed there was no direct bus to El Calafate and the closest we could go was Rio Gallegos. The price seemed a little expensive so we decided to head back the the center and check out both car rental and flights. Both of these options were way too expensive so at 4pm we headed back out to the bus station. To say we were not impressed would be an understatement, the buses were fully booked out and our only option was to book one for the following day. We went back to our hotel to be told they had no rooms available for the night, all raging at this stage! At 6.30pm we eventually found a nice hostel that was located in the center of the town and very close to the beach.
In all we spent around 9 hours trying to
1) Find a way out of the city
2) A Hostel/Hotel for the night
An absolute shit show.....
The following day was a little more relaxed and enjoyable. We spent the day on the crowded beach before boarding our 36 hour bus journey to Rio Gallegos.
Pa and Steve went for a few beers on both nights in the pub/disco area. One of the pubs was like being at one of Seany Boyle's soccer discos, needless to say they stayed there for the night! However, the consequences of 14 hard nights in BA were a little too much to handle and like Bat at home in bed, we were coming down hard and fast.
