Hosteria Las Lucarnas

Tired of buses and bus tours we opted for our own road trip around the Seven Lakes, a 400km mostly dirt track journey through the lakes, rivers, waterfalls, rapids, forests and snow-clad peaks of Nahuel Huapi National Park. We stayed in the lake-side town of San Martin de los Andes for the first night, Hosteria Las Lucarnas being the first hostel in South America to have an ensuite bath! We spoilt ourselves to a bottle of Mumm champagne and salmon from the supermarket followed by excellent deer (sadly wild boar are out of season!) at the attentive Ku restaurant. San Martin also boasts the first Levi´s shop in South America and Emma, missing her jeans for 2 months, felt the need to dip into her purse! We also posted a package home and discovered Argentinian bureaucracy at first hand! A simple task involved trips to the Post Office, the Customs office (across town), the Post Office (they´d neglected to sell us a box), the Customs office (to discuss what we were sending for 25mins) and the Post Office (to discuss what we were sending for 25mins). Hopefully this package will fair better than the first package that arrived home with all but 2 items removed by Argentinian jobsworth customs officers. Onwards through more lakes and villages to our own Swiss-style chalet (or cabana) complete with rastafarian Airedale Terrier (kidnapped by Emma for the night!) and self-cooked fayre. We returned the car at break-neck speed (Dan was speechless in the passenger seat most of the journey) dead-on 10am the next morning narrowly avoiding most wildlife, a police checkpoint search and a late return fee.
