As some of the way can be crossed only at low tide, I had to leave the Hut around 6AM in the dark in order to arrive at the right time 8h50 AM at Awaroa hut for the low tide. I ve started the hike with my head torch by night in the rainforest: quite impressive to walk alone in the dark with all the noise surrounded you with only the pale light of your torch...
I progressed on the way with the rising sun on my right bringing more and more light on the way.
As I started very early, I m the first one to do the trace on the beach to go to Awaroa.
When I arrived to Awaroa, a lot of people where sleeping there during the night in order to wake up just in time for the low tide. It s funny to cross the river when you think that few minutes it s almost the see that you have to cross to arrive on the other shore.
The way after is very easy and you can meet all the people who did not dare to walk in the water and who took an aquataxi to come on the other side. During all the way, you can take an aquataxi to go from beaches to beaches which make it a lot easier when you don't like to walk.
I arrived around midday to Totaranui beach and I slept on the beach fighting with the sandflies to not be eaten alive. At 3AM my aquataxi arrived to pick me up to the start of the hike.
