Fertilia town in the distance
A pleasant 7km stroll along the beach, heading north from Alghero, brought us to Fertilia - a "new town" created by Mussolini in the 1930s as part of Fascism's glorification of returning to the land. The town consisted of a few wide streets (just one of which was of any interest to us as it had a couple of bars/cafes on it - the others were lined with residential apartment blocks). We chose a bar called "Cohiba" and whiled away a couple of hours eating bruschetta and avoiding the mid-day sun.

We tried bruschetta with "Bottarga" - a traditional Sardinian delicacy of salted, pressed & dried grey mullet roe. It tasted much better than you might imagine.... and we even bought some to bring home!
In the centre of town is a huge church which is far too big for this little village
Mussolini's architecture, Fertilia
Apparently Mussolini had grand plans for Fertilia to grow into a large port (even large enough to rival Venice), hence the church is named after St Mark and the square is called the Piazza Venezia Giulia. Needless to say Mussolini's plans didn't pan out and Fertilia is now just a sleepy backwater.Fertilia
