Where I stayed

As i finally sit down to write my promised blog for all those I've left behind in the antipidies, it's only today that I'm feeling more positive again about this trip and the whole travelling experience. I realise now it was a mistake to think the change of location and cultures would be anything but a big learning and shock to the system. The exact moment it all changed  I was trundling down JL Legian towards Kuta laden with my pack when I hear a familiar voice booming out on the sidewalk and I have to say Tony Greig has never sounded so sweet, I looked up to see that the sports bar it was coming from was of course showing todays onedayer between Australia & Pakistan.

19th January 2010

Between finishing packing up and all the other last minute preparations I cut getting to the airport way to fine and after missing by 1 minute the vital train to the airport I missed checkin by 15 minutes so this blog really starts tomorrow.

20th January 2010

Take Two arrive at the airport with plenty of time to check in, the extra day was in in the end a fortunate thing as I got a few more important things done before I left.

Arriving in Bali I shared a taxi with a German sheila who'd just flown in from Cairns and was staying at the same Hotel, she was in much the same situation as I was travelling on her own and figured she'd meet up with someone along the way, we talked on the way to the hotel, things looked promising, she wasn't an unattractive girl and she said she'd see me at breakfast the next morning, when we parted ways.

21st January 2010

Woke up not knowing what the time was but was excited about the continental breakfast that came with the room and didn't want to miss out, arrived at breakfast to find it wasn't even 8:00 and the breakfast consisted of two pieces of toast, and some fruit or fruit juice. No sign of the German girl while I was there, so I headed off early to do some shopping and have a look around, it was still pretty early in the morning so there weren't many other tourists around and once I hit the main street the hawkers started swarming around me like flies on a dung heap. The shopkeepers weren't so bad but I was definitely feeling harassed after I had two hawkers start following me down the road trying to engage me in conversation, where was I from, what was my name etc, after they ran out of questions I picked up the pace leaving them trailing behind me after another 200 metres or more I was wondering if they were ever going to give up the chase, when I spotted a cafe with free wifi and ducked inside, after brunch and a beer nearly an hour later I found one of them still waiting in the same spot as I reemerged, and thought here we go again, thankfully that was the edge of his region, and he quickly fell behind as I strode free back to the sanctuary and serenity of my hotel.

Back at the hotel still no sign of German girl so after some time to settle my nerves, I steeled myself to reenter the fray for some more exploration and shopping. The second excursion was much easier to bare, but got a little lost and a lot sunburnt (now just a tan from the shirt sleeve down and sock line up).

22nd January 2010

I decided I couldn't handle another day in Kuta so I decided to checkout and catch the bus up to Ubud and as I was leaving I spotted the German girl tearing away with a guy on the back of his motorbike, it's always the guy with the wheels that gets all the girls. So with that I set off laden with my pack to trundle down JL Legian ...

Tune in next time to hear about our heroes exciting adventures in Ubud where he comes face to face with his newly acquired nemesis the motorbike.
