My idea of a couple of quiet days in New York wasn't going completely to plan... After hearing that my ticket to Rio was now useless (see previous entry) I had to shop around on the internet and by phone until I came up with some alternatives. Luckily my dorm at the Continental Hostel on W95th Street was really comfortable and Megan and Pierre who I was sharing with were both really nice. They were really excited to be in New York for the first time so we all went up to see Times Square and have a few beers. The following day I got organised and decided that seeing as my plans had changed I would take the opportunity to visit my sister and her family in California and booked a 3 flight connection there with US Airways. That done, I spent a few hours relaxing and having lunch in Central Park - admiring the skyline, walking around the lake and people-watching as I read my book. Not wildly exciting stuff but a quiet change from the rushing around of the last week... To catch my flight to Bakersfield the following day I first took the train out to Long Island from Penn Station. At the airport I had time on my hands so I rang the toll-free numbers for TACA and COPA Airlines and eventually found a cheap flight to Colombia which I booked for next week. The US Airways flights were hugely disppointing - the two short flights were fine but the longest leg Philadelphia-Vegas was nearly 5hours long - they served no food and if you wanted to watch the film you had to pay $5 to buy a headset. And I thought Ryanair were cheapskates.....
